A "bone-deep conservative"? Burke would be spinning in his grace, as would Oakeshott. Radical, revanchist, robespierran, right-wing maoist, practitioner of year zero politics, who knows; but conservative? Feels like entirely the wrong descriptor. If it's conservatism, it's entirely an alien tradition.

I agree Burke (who was a Whig, of course) and Oakeshott would find little commonality but I don’t see any point in trying to to tell Miller et al that they aren’t “conservatives”. It’s always had a number of strands but at the end of the day it’s about what fights are worth fighting. He’s certainly not a liberal, and that’s the self-perceived dichotomy of American politics currently, so…
