European countries *sometimes* seem to understand intellectually that most of them - NATO members, anyway - have had a free ride in terms of security for 75 years, but they show little inclination to do anything about it. It's one of the reasons I bridle at Mark Rutte becoming secretary-general of NATO: the Netherlands has simply not pulled its weight.
Ive met many baltic, scandinavian and hanseatic nationals who get it. Sadly theyre lost amid currents of those who fail to acknowledge the harsh reality of history,culture and environment. It is not a modern phenomena, sadly, we seem to forget too soon what our grandparents learnt hard.
I think the Baltic nations, for whom I have a natural affection, get it because they know how close Russia is and how Russia behaves. They have skin in the game.
